‘Endurance’ in the ice, by Frank Hurley (1915)
Oh my effing god, The National Maritime Museum have just updated their Flickr with new images from my ultimate hero Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917).
This is Endurance caught in the ice before she was crushed.
Oh, and if you don’t know the story, you should. You really bloody should. You need to know about the man about whom it was said by Raymond Priestley, a British Antarctic explorer who accompanied Shackleton on various Antarctic expeditions:
“For scientific leadership, give me Scott; for swift and efficient travel, Amundsen; but when you are in a hopeless situation, when there seems to be no way out, get on your knees and pray for Shackleton.”
HERO.
ARB for HERO and insane adventures!
ARB for Frank Hurley. I think I meant to do a post about his World War I photography over at 1/125 but never did more than a couple of lines worth of draft on it. Should look that thing up and see if I can finish it, too. But, don’t wait along for me, go look the dude up yourself.
